Our Staff


Head Of School: Adam Armstrong

Adam Armstrong became the Head Of School in the fall of 2015.  He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Washington State University and is working on his Master’s in Education with an Emphasis in Leadership from Cairn University (formerly Philadelphia Biblical University). Before joining the team at UVC he was an assistant to the Northwest Regional Director of The Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). It was through his role at ACSI serving 150 Christian schools across the Northwest that he was introduced to UVC. Adam and his wife Sarah Beth were married in 2003 and have two children, Reed and Claire. As a family they are excited to be a part of the UVC family, knowing that God is at work in the communities of Roseburg and Douglas County.  


Registrar/Robotics: Josh Carr

Josh Carr has been with UVC since 2012. Josh is currently the school Registrar..  Josh has taught Pre-Calculus, Algebra 2, Geometry, Business Math, Pre-Algebra, General Math, Computer Apps, and PE. Josh graduated from Simpson University in 2003 with a degree in Mathematics. Prior to UVC, Josh spent nine years as a Store Manager with Blockbuster Video before feeling God’s call to Christian Education. Josh is married to fellow UVC teacher Mandy Carr and has a daughter, Ivy and a son, Grady who both attend UVC. Josh has a passion for Baseball, which he still plays every summer and has coached the UVC girl's softball team as well as assisted with the girl's basketball team. The Carrs attend Pine Grove Community Church.

Finance Director: Rebecca Jewell

Rebecca Jewell is our Finance Director. She graduated from Sam Houston State University with Masters in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. She comes to UVC with four years of teaching experience in elementary education within the public school sector and currently holds a Texas teaching certification. She and her husband have three sons all in attendance at UVC and love to spend time traveling, participating in sports, and spending time with family and friends. Rebecca and her family attend Redeemer's Fellowship Church. 

Secretary: Frances Zink

Frances Zink has been with UVC since 1991. She was a classroom monitor for the first through third grades and recess/playground monitor for many years. In 1997 she became the part-time UVC Secretary at the elementary campus that soon became full-time. She is also the Director of the UVC Preschool.  She has worked with children since seventh grade with Christian Youth in Action doing five-day clubs and helping in a Good News Club.  Her first job after high school was in a preschool working with two to three-year-olds.  Her education is in Early Childhood Education through the Child Care Division of Oregon, completing continuing education classes yearly. Her three sons all graduated from UVC and are now working as a department manager, construction engineer in management, and an Air Force hydraulic mechanic on planes.  She enjoys sewing, quilting, camping, and family time with her children and six grandchildren.   Mrs. Zink attends Wellspring Bible Fellowship.

Special Education Coordinator/English (7-12): Laurel Santos

Laurel Santos joined the UVC family in 2016 as both teacher and SPED Coordinator. She holds a bachelor’s degree from The University of North Alabama and a Master’s in Education from Bob Jones University. Laurel has had the privilege of ministering in five different Christian schools in a variety of roles. She and her husband, Garry, are members of Victory Baptist Church. She enjoys reading, Card/Board games, and cooking. One of her favorite activities is Cake Day each Spring. Her greatest goals for the students God has allowed her the privilege of teaching are that they desire to serve God faithfully and that they achieve academically to the highest level that God desires for them.

Pre-school/Art/Early Elementary Department Head: Kirsi Shepherd

Mrs. Shepherd graduated Magna Cum Laude from Warner Pacific College in 1996 with a major in Human Development, minor in Elementary Education and an endorsement in Early Childhood Education.  She is a current state certified teacher and a step ten out of twelve in the Oregon Registry of Childhood Care and Education Professionals. Mrs. Shepherd has been teaching Kindergarten and Preschool in Christian schools since she graduated from college.  Over these years she has developed a two year curriculum based on a semi-chronological study of the Bible with corresponding monthly units.  The goal of the curriculum is to teach children a basic systematic theology through meaningful experiences that young minds can understand.  Mrs. Shepherd is very thankful God has called her to teach at UVC because ministering to young children and their families gives her a deep sense of joy and fulfillment in her life.  Mrs. Shepherd is married to Don Shepherd and is the proud mother of Sophie and Scottie Shepherd.  When she is not teaching preschool or Art she likes to work in her flower garden with her Boston Terrier.  Mrs. Shepherd and her family attend the Foursquare church in Roseburg.

Kindergarten: Mamie Gurney

Mamie joined UVC as the First Grade Teacher in the fall of 2016. She is currently the Kindergarten teacher and Opportunity Center Aide. She has a Bachelors degree in Special Education and Interdisciplinary Studies from Liberty University. She has an ACSI Elementary Certificate. Before coming to UVC, she taught a blended Kindergarten and First Grade class. Mrs. Gurney moved from Maryland in 2013 to live with her family after her father's passing. In her "spare" time, she enjoys playing sports, singing, dancing, acting, and reading books. She has grown more since teaching her students at UVC as well as with the support of her co-workers. Her goal is to make a difference and she hopes to do so by spreading God's Word to the young learners at UVC. Mamie and her husband James are passionately involved as member of their church Covenant Life Fellowship.


1st Grade: Jennifer Bormuth

Jennifer holds a Master’s degree in education from Southern Oregon University.  She also attended Oregon State for her undergraduate work and is a Beaver fan.  She has been working professionally with children ages infants through school age since 1996.  For the past 5 years she has been teaching special education in Douglas County.  She and her husband met at a young adult fellowship group in their first years of college in Roseburg.  They have been happily married since 1995 and both share a passion for teaching.  Her husband Aaron has been teaching in Douglas County since 1999.  Jennifer and her husband have both taught swim lessons and have been life guards.  Their family includes two bright and amazing daughters they are very proud of who came to the lord at a young age.  Their daughters love the water so by the end of summer often have greenish hair.  As a family they like to play board games and go on trips to the coast.  Their family attends Winston Community Baptist Church and welcomes any additions to the church family.

2nd Grade: Teri Wilkinson

Teri Wilkinson graduated with her Masters in Elementary Education, with a Reading emphasis, from Pacific Union College in 1991.  Pacific Union College is a Seventh-day Adventist school located in Northern California.  In the Autumn of that year she started her teaching career at a one-teacher school in Mt. Shasta.  After teaching in northern California for four years, she moved to eastern Washington and spent two more years teaching in one-teacher schools.  In the summer of 1997, Teri and her family moved to Richmond, Virginia where she taught 7th & 8th grade homeroom, as well as high school Home Ec. Bible and English.  After four years in Virginia, Teri and her family moved to Oregon.  Teri taught grades 1-4 at a two-teacher school in La Grande for the next four years.  Finally, they moved to Roseburg where Teri has been teaching for the past 12 years.  Most recently Teri has been serving as the Principal/Teacher of the one-teacher Adventist school in Sutherlin.  Over her 26 years of teaching for the Adventist Church educational system, Teri has had the opportunity to teach all levels from kindergarten through high-school in a variety of grade combinations. Teri and her husband Bob both grew up in Alaska.  Teri graduated from high-school in Bozeman, Montana before moving with her parents to Northern California.  Teri and Bob were married in August  of 1987.  They have three grown children; Ashley, Amber and Gregory . The oldest is married and living in Canada.  Teri enjoys spending time with her family, visiting the coast (specifically Bandon!), reading, and scrapbooking.  Teri and Bob attend the Turning Point Seventh-day Adventist Community Church in Roseburg.


3rd Grade: Pamela Sullivan

Pamela Sullivan has been teaching for over 10 years, and her heart's desire is to reflect Titus 2:7-8 which says "Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us." Pamela has taught Preschool, Kindergarten, 3rd Grade, and 4th Grade. She has a Master's Degree from Grand Canyon University in Elementary Education. She has been married to her husband for over 20 years and has 3 kids, two in high school, and one in college.


4th Grade: Natasha Johnson

Natasha Johnson has been teaching full- time at UVC since 2012.  During her time at UVC, Mrs. Johnson has taught both 3rd & 4th grade. She attended both Western Oregon University and Oregon State University, and received her Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences with an Educational Option from Oregon State University in 2003.  She then went on to graduate from Pacific University, with honors, receiving her Masters of Arts in Teaching degree in 2005. Mrs. Johnson worked as a substitute teacher in the Roseburg Public School system before taking time off to raise her two girls who now attend UVC.  She has a passion for Christian Education and loves the feeling of family and support that UVC gives her.  Outside of school, Mrs. Johnson enjoys spending time with family, traveling, running, and attending OSU sporting events.  GO BEAVERS!  The Johnsons attend Family Church.

5th Grade: Marla Smart

Marla Smart has began working for UVCS in 1994. After taking some time off to raise her family, she rejoined the UVCS staff in 2013. She also worked as an instructional assistant in the Roseburg Public School system in that interim. Marla graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor's degree in Human Development and Family Studies and a specialization in Early Childhood Development and holds a Texas state teaching license. She and her husband, Jerry, pastor at Foursquare Gospel Center in Winston. All three of the Smarts' children (Emilie, Taylor, and Hayden) are UVCS alumni. In her spare time, Mrs. Smart enjoys reading, writing, having family time with her husband, children, and son-in-law (Joseph,) and playing with her two cats, Mozart and Ping. Her relationship with the Lord is foremost in her life and is continually growing.

6th Grade: Tyler Yutzie

Tyler Yutzie

Mr. Yutzie began his teaching career in 2015, teaching fifth grade at Lincoln Middle School in Oakland, OR and subbed throughout Douglas County for the 2016/17 school year. Prior to teaching, Mr. Yutzie spent 12 years working with at-risk youth as a residential counselor and youth worker. He has been married to his wife, Regina, for just over 22  years. He and his wife have 4 sons, Levi, a senior at RHS, Luke, a freshman at RHS, and Parker and Wyatt, both sixth graders at UVC. He and his family live in Roseburg, and attend the Green Campus of Family Church. Mr. Yutzie hopes to become a part of the UVC athletic staff, as well. He has over ten years of coaching experience at various levels and sports.


Health/PE (grades K-6): Kirsti Hellenthal


Kirsti Hellenthal joined UVC in the fall of 2015 teaching elementary PE. She is currently teaching secondary Health and elementary PE. She has a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in Teacher Education, and holds her California teaching credential and Oregon Teaching license. Mrs. Hellenthal has been teaching for over 17 years, with some time off to raise her family. Her teaching experience includes, teaching at UCC, elementary, middle school, and high school PE, and Health. She is married to Brad Hellental and they have two children, Ty and Meagan, who both attend UVC.

Aide: Leslie Ayers

Leslie Ayers has proudly served at UVCS since 2003. She began working at UVCS as a housekeeper. In 2006 a Teacher's Aide position became available. In 2009 she earned her Preschool Certification and has continued to stay current with the Oregon state regulations. Leslie loves children and feels that spending time with them is very important. She is happily married to a happily married man. Leslie is a proud Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother who enjoys RV Camping, Landscape Gardening, and Scrapbooking. Leslie and her husband attend Covenant Life Fellowship.

Aide: Beth McLaughlin

Beth McLaughlin has been with UVC for eight years. This year she is teaching physical education at the elementary campus in addition to being a teacher’s aide. She has attended vocational college and Concordia University. Beth has also coached the UVC High School softball team and is currently coaching the Junior and High School Volleyball team. When she isn’t coaching she enjoys horses and being a mom to three great kids who attend UVC. The McLaughlins attend Redeemers Fellowship.    

History (grades 9-12):

Gretchen Perkins

Gretchen Perkins is currently the history teacher for the middle/high school students, and is also the chair of the Curriculum Committee. Gretchen started at UVCS in 2008 as a middle school/high school science teacher. She then became the principal of our elementary campus in 2011.
Gretchen graduated from Warner Pacific College with a degree in Social Science Education, and began her career in education in 1996 at King’s Way Christian School in Vancouver, Washington. While teaching middle school history at King’s Way, Gretchen continued her education at George Fox University and earned her Master’s Degree in Education.
Gretchen is married to Scott Perkins, and has twin daughters- Abby and Ellie. She loves to spend time with her family, reading, camping, and is active in her church- Sutherlin Family Church. Her passion is for Christian education, and it excites her to see students learn history through the lens of Truth.

Algebra 2 / Pre-Calculus / Calculus / Math tutoring (grades 7-12): Brian Vogt

Brian teaches Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus as well as providing additional math tutoring. Mr. Vogt also teaches evenings as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Umpqua Community College. Mr. Vogt served on a nuclear submarine in the sonar shack, as a lookout, and as a helms/planesman.  He and his wife have seven children.  Mr. Vogt has a passion for Christians to learn to handle money God's way so they can live and give abundantly.  Brian and his family attend church at North Umpqua Bible Fellowship.

Secondary Mathematics (grades 9-12): Juli Gettys

Juli Gettys teaches Secondary Mathematics. Juli received her degree from Oregon State University.  She has been teaching for over 20 years in various schools from UCC to Douglas County Jail. She is returing to UVC after four years working at Starbucks. Juli is married to Dwayne Gettys, a CT with Douglas County Fire Dist. 2. Juli has 3 kids who have all attended UVC, 1 graduate, and 2 who have attended since Kindergarten. She is also looking forward to grandbaby attending in a few years.  The Gettys attend Family Church.


Spanish (grades 7-12): Petra Wilke

Miss Wilke believes students learn the Spanish language best by immersion. Petra asks her student to call her "Maestra Petra". She has taught Spanish at a Christian school in Camas Valley and before coming to teaching in Southern Oregon, she had spend the previous ten years serving at a school in Mexico. She is inspired by the vision of pointing the students to Christ in all things. Miss Wilke believes in expecting students to do their best, and then giving them the tools to do it. It is her endeavor to help the students learn to love learning Spanish. 

Science (grades 7-12): Marie Smith

Marie Smith has taught in Christian schools for the last thirty years. For ten of those years she taught all subjects in a one-room high school, from which all three of her sons graduated. She graduated from Humboldt State University with a degree in Wildlife Biology and a post graduate degree in Range Management, and a CA teaching credential.  She was working as a field biologist for the US Forest Service when Jesus changed her career path. Christian education is her passion. Her sons attended a Christian school from kindergarten through twelfth grade and two are now engineers and one is a zoologist.  Besides Christian education Mrs. Smith enjoys raising poultry, gardening, canning, needlework, Scottish history, her basset hounds, and her granddaughter. The Smiths attend North Umpqua Bible Fellowship.


Athletic Director / Bible (grades 7-12): Glen Dishman

Glen started at UVC in the fall of 2016. He has a Bachelor's degree from Corban University in Biblical Studies. Post-graduate studies were at Black Hills State in South Dakota, and Fresno Pacific University. Glen has been in Christian education for over 35 years. He has also taught P.E., Weight Training, Health, Math, Driver’s Ed, Finance and Family Living. He has served as an Athletic Director 20+ years, Dean of Students and also served on an ACSI curriculum team.
Coaching history: Football, Basketball, Track – Coach of the Year five times. 
During his time of coaching Track, he led his team to 16 league championships and five sectional championships in California in eight years.
He has a passion for music ministry and has been on worship teams and choirs with his wife, Vickie. They are marriage mentors with the American Association of Christian Counselors. They have four lovely daughters, who are all married, except one. They have eight grandchildren.
His saying is “born and bred, corn fed, red ‘til dead – GO BIG RED NEBRASKA!” His passion is teaching the Word of God and seeing students grow in their Christian life. He loves God, family, football, students and snow. He and his wife attend Family Church in Green.

Assistant to the Athletic Director: Vickie Dishman


Vickie Dishman joined the UVC family in 2016.  She and her husband moved here from Brookings, Oregon.  She works part-time as an assistant to the Athletic Director, and occasionally helps out in the office as a backup for Mrs. Zink. Vickie and her husband are graduates of the American Association of Christian Counselors program.  Vickie and her husband’s family are scattered across the west coast with the exception of a daughter in Utah. They enjoy Christian contemporary music such as Chris Tomlin and Casting Crowns.  Vickie plays the piano and sometimes accompanies the elementary choir.  She and her husband love to hike in God’s creation, especially if there’s a waterfall nearby.  She also enjoys reading.  She and her husband attend Family Church in Green.  

Finance / Business Academy: Diane M. Mahoney

Diane M. Mahoney is currently the President/CEO of Environné/Consumer Health Research, Inc. a company she has owned since 1995. Environné is known throughout the USA and many countries for being the original and trusted fruit and vegetable wash, on the grocery store shelf. She also is on staff at Umpqua Community College as a Business Advisor through the Small Business Development Center. Diane graduated with degrees from Rowan University/Education, Widener University/Business Administration and San Diego/Hospitality Management. She has taught at the high school and middle school levels for Southern Regional in New Jersey and in the Bandon School District. In 2013, Diane created UVC's Business Academy and is currently teaching Personal Finance and Into. to Domestic & International Business.  Stop in her room to hear about the long range plans! Kolby and Myla have been attending UVC since 2009. When not in the office or the classroom, you will find Diane cheering on the sideline for her children’s sports, enjoying the beauty of Southern Oregon on their boat and snow skiing. Their family is proudly dedicated to the Lord and their Christian faith while attending St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.      

Leadership: Sarah Beth Armstrong

Sarah Beth Armstrong graduated from Life Pacific College (formally LIFE Bible College) in 1999 with a BA in Bible with an emphasis in teaching, and received certification in Health Education from Concordia University Portland in 2004. She holds teaching Licenses for both Oregon and Washington. She taught for 12 years at Vancouver Christian High School teaching a verity of classes including, but not limited to, Leadership, Health, Drama, and Career Education. Her first year at UVC was the 2015-2016 year teaching Servant Leadership. She loves spending time with her two kids and husband exploring, camping, and going on adventures. Sarah Beth and her family attend New Life Christian Center.

Lunch Program/Home Economics: Terri Soper

Terri Soper has been working with the hot lunch program and teaching Home Ec since 2016.  She has been sewing since the age of 14.  She has had many years of cooking for large groups.  In her spare time, she enjoys quilting and spending time with family and friends.  The Sopers attend Redeemers Fellowship.

Transportation: Tommie White

Tommie is the Bus Driver for UVC. Tommie was born in Coquille, OR and raised in Bandon. He graduated from Bandon High School in 1993. After graduation, he fell in love with the Roseburg area. He has worked at Umpqua Dairy. He attended C.R. England truck driving school and got his class A CDL in 1999. He also attended a vocational rehab program and received an associate degree. Tommie has two grown children. He married his wife, Amy Bagwell, in 2003 and they have two beautiful children, Konnir & Breanne, who both attend UVC. His hobbies include playing with his children, cooking, and the game of pool. Tommie and his wife enjoy hosting dinner for friends and family and having a short game night afterwards. Tommie’s wife introduced him to Wellspring Bible Fellowship and it continues to be their church home.


Facilities: Steve Soper

Steve Soper has been UVC Facilities Manager for the past year. He graduated from Umpqua Community College with an AA degree in Automotive Technology. He retired after 22 years in the Air Force. He went on to retire from the Roseburg Public School District after twelve years as a Site Operator. He and his family are very active in the Bikers For Christ Ministry. The Sopers attend Redeemers Fellowship.
