Our Staff

 

Head Of School: Adam Armstrong

Adam Armstrong became the Head Of School in the fall of 2015.  He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Washington State University and is working on his Master’s in Education with an Emphasis in Leadership from Cairn University (formerly Philadelphia Biblical University). Before joining the team at UVC he was an assistant to the Northwest Regional Director of The Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). It was through his role at ACSI serving 150 Christian schools across the Northwest that he was introduced to UVC. Adam and his wife Sarah Beth were married in 2003 and have two children, Reed and Claire. As a family they are excited to be a part of the UVC family, knowing that God is at work in the communities of Roseburg and Douglas County.  

 

Director of Teacher Development/History (grades 9-12):

Gretchen Perkins

Gretchen Perkins graduated from Warner Pacific College in 1996 with a BS in Social Science Education and received her Masters in Education from George Fox University in 2001. She spent eight years at King’s Way Christian School in Vancouver, Washington teaching in fifth grade and as a junior high history teacher. She was principal of our Roberts Creek primary campus for four years.  Before that she taught history and science at our Deer Creek secondary campus.  She loves to read, camp, spend time with her family and friends, and visit new places. She also loves helping with her youth group at her church Hucrest Community Church of God.
 

Registrar/Computers (grades 7-8): Josh Carr

Josh Carr has been with UVC since 2012. Josh is currently the school Registrar as well as a teacher.  Josh has taught Pre-Calculus, Algebra 2, Geometry, Business Math, Pre-Algebra, General Math, Computer Apps, and PE. Josh graduated from Simpson University in 2003 with a degree in Mathematics. Prior to UVC, Josh spent nine years as a Store Manager with Blockbuster Video before feeling God’s call to Christian education. Josh is married to fellow UVC teacher Mandy Carr and has a daughter, Ivy and a son, Grady who both attend UVC. Josh has a passion for baseball, which he still plays every summer and has coached the UVC girls’ softball team as well as assisted with the girl's basketball team. The Carrs attend Pine Grove Community Church.
 

Secretary: Frances Zink

Frances Zink has been with UVC since 1991. She was a classroom monitor for the first through third grades and recess/playground monitor for many years. In 1997 she became the part-time UVC Secretary at the elementary campus that soon became full-time. She is also the Director of the UVC Preschool for the last five years.  She has worked with children since seventh grade with Christian Youth in Action doing five-day clubs and helping in a Good News Club.  Her first job after high school was in a preschool working with two to three-year-olds.  Her education is in Early Childhood Education through the Child Care Division of Oregon, completing continuing education classes yearly. Her three sons all graduated from UVC and are now working as a department manager, construction engineer in management, and an Air Force hydraulic mechanic on planes.  She enjoys sewing, quilting, camping, and family time with her children and six grandchildren.   Mrs. Zink attends Wellspring Bible Fellowship.
 

Special Education Coordinator/Math (6th grade)/

Science (grades 7-8): Laurel Santos

Laurel Santos joined the UVC family in 2016 as both teacher and SPED Coordinator. She holds a bachelor’s degree from The University of North Alabama and a Master’s in Education from Bob Jones University. Laurel has had the privilege of ministering in five different Christian schools in a variety of roles. She is currently teaching 6th & 7th grade math, 7th/8th grade Earth Science, 9th grade Geography, and 11th grade American Literature. She and her husband, Garry, are members of Victory Baptist Church. Her greatest goals for the students God has allowed her the privilege of teaching are that they desire to serve God faithfully and that they achieve academically to the highest level that God desires for them.

Pre-school: Kirsi Shepherd

Mrs. Shepherd graduated Magna Cum Laude from Warner Pacific College in 1996 with a major in Human Development, minor in Elementary Education and an endorsement in Early Childhood Education.  She is a current state certified teacher and a step ten out of twelve in the Oregon Registry of Childhood Care and Education Professionals.  Mrs. Shepherd has fourteen years of teaching experience teaching kindergarten and preschool in Christian schools.  Over these years she has developed a two year curriculum based on a semi-chronological study of the Bible with corresponding monthly units.  The goal of the curriculum is to teach children a basic systematic theology through meaningful experiences that young minds can understand.  Mrs. Shepherd is very thankful God has called her to teach at UVC because ministering to young children and their families gives her a deep sense of meaning and fulfillment in her life.  Mrs. Shepherd is married to Don Shepherd and is the proud mother of Sophie and Scottie Shepherd.  When she is not teaching preschool, Children’s Church, or Art she likes to work in her flower garden with her Boston Terrier “Myles.”  Mrs. Shepherd and her family attend the Foursquare church in Roseburg.


Kindergarten: Daletta Fong

Daletta Fong grew up east of Springfield, Oregon on the beautiful McKenzie River.  She attended college at Northwest Nazarene University in Idaho where she majored in Elementary Education. Her first teaching experience was in a tiny school where she taught a combined kindergarten through second grade class.  She and her husband Ward and their family lived for two years in France and over four years in Burkina Faso, Africa while serving with Wycliffe Bible Translators.  While in Africa Mrs. Fong homeschooled their two oldest children.  Since their return from Africa Mrs. Fong has taught kindergarten, first, and second grades in Christian schools.  Two of the Fong’s four children are UVC graduates and the younger two are now a senior and a sophomore.  This year Mrs. Fong begins her sixth year of teaching kindergarten at UVC. Mrs. Fong enjoys long walks upon the beach, camping and hiking, sewing and knitting. She loves waterfalls and wildflowers and believes that one of the most wonderful things in the world is the joyful sound of children’s laughter.  The Fong’s attend Wellspring Bible
 

1st Grade: Mamie Sorensen

Mamie Sorensen joined UVC as the First Grade Teacher in the fall of 2016. She has a Bachelors degree in Special Education and Interdisciplinary Studies from Liberty University. Mamie started as a Substitute Teacher and an Instructional Assistant for Special Education. Before coming to UVC, she taught a blended Kindergarten and First Grade class. Miss Sorensen moved from Maryland in 2013 to live with her family after her father's passing. Since moving to Roseburg, her life has been positively changed since becoming a member at Covenant Life Fellowship. She has grown more while teaching her students at UVC as well as the support of her co-workers. Her goal is to make a difference and she hopes to do so by spreading God's Word to the young learners at UVC. 


2nd Grade: Amber Luzier

Amber joined UVC during the 2016-2017 school year as a first year, second grade teacher. She studied at Northwest Christian University and got her degree in Elementary/Middle School Education with abilities to teach Math and English Language Learners. Amber graduated with over 1,500 hours of teaching experience in the Eugene and surrounding area. She is recently married to a Roseburg native, Taylor Luzier, who works at the YMCA in membership. The Luzier's attend church at Calapooia Free Methodist Church in Sutherlin. Amber is excited to work at UVC and help lead worship on chapel days! Second grade was an unexpected blessing in her life and she can’t thank God enough for the young people He has placed in her path.
 

3rd Grade: Rebecca Jewell

Rebecca Jewell graduated from Sam Houston State University with Masters in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. She comes to UVC with four years of teaching experience in elementary education within the public school sector and currently holds a Texas teaching certification. This will be her second year at UVC and teaching first grade. She and her husband have three sons all in attendance at UVC and love to spend time traveling, participating in sports, and spending time with family and friends.  Rebecca and her family attend Redeemer's Fellowship Church.

 

4th Grade: Natasha Johnson

Natasha Johnson has been teaching full- time at UVC since 2012.  During her time at UVC, Mrs. Johnson has taught both 3rd & 4th grade. She attended both Western Oregon University and Oregon State University, and received her Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences with an Educational Option from Oregon State University in 2003.  She then went on to graduate from Pacific University, with honors, receiving her Masters of Arts in Teaching degree in 2005. Mrs. Johnson worked as a substitute teacher in the Roseburg Public School system before taking time off to raise her two girls who now attend UVC.  She has a passion for Christian Education and loves the feeling of family and support that UVC gives her.  Outside of school, Mrs. Johnson enjoys spending time with family, traveling, running, and attending OSU sporting events.  GO BEAVERS!  The Johnsons attend Family Church.


5th/6th Grade: Marla Smart

Marla Smart has taught school for four years at UVC and been an instructional assistant for three years in the Roseburg Public School system. She begins her fifth year at UVC in the fifth grade classroom. She graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies and a specialization in Early Childhood Education, and a Texas state teaching license. Two of the Smarts’ children have graduated from UVC. The oldest is in college at UCC (nursing) and the next is a member of the National Guard. The youngest is still attending UVC high school. In her spare time, Mrs. Smart enjoys reading, writing, crafting, and playing with her dog, Gracie, and two cats, Mozart and Lucy. Her relationship with the Lord is foremost in her life and is continually growing. Marla and her husband minister together at Foursquare Gospel Center in Winston, as the Children’s Pastor and Senior Pastor, respectively.

Aide: Leslie Ayers

Leslie Ayers has had the privilege to serve at UVC for the last 11 years. In 2003 she begin working at UVC as a housekeeper.  In 2006 she became a Teacher’s Aide.  In 2009 she received certification for preschool instruction and has continued to stay current with Oregon state regulations. All the time spent with children is important time. She is happily married to a wonderful man.  She has a delightful daughter who is entering her Senior Year at UVC. Leslie enjoys RV camping, scrapbooking, and landscape gardening. The Ayers church home is Roseburg Alliance Church.


Aide: Beth McLaughlin

Beth McLaughlin has been with UVC for eight years. This year she is teaching physical education at the elementary campus in addition to being a teacher’s aide. She has attended vocational college and Concordia University. Beth has also coached the UVC High School softball team and is currently coaching the Junior and High School Volleyball team. When she isn’t coaching she enjoys horses and being a mom to three great kids who attend UVC. The McLaughlins attend Redeemers Fellowship.

Media Arts: Kevin Bain

Kevin Bain has been with UVC since fall of 2015 after teaching in the public education sector for 15 years.  He has been tasked to design and develop the secondary English program after serving as a co-curriculum developer at Delta Academy for the Performing Arts in the Bay Area.  After serving four years in the United States Marine Corps, Mr. Bain attended Lassen College and the University of Nevada- Reno as a Liberal Studies and Journalism major.  He didn't finish his Journalism degree; however, as God directed him into education after a brief stint as a long term substitute teacher at Plumas Christian School in Quincy, CA.  After transferring to Simpson University in the winter of 1996, he completed two short-term mission trips; one trip to Russia and the other to Ukraine.  He graduated with a BA in Social Sciences in 1998 and received his California teaching credential in 2000.  He and his wife of seven years, Michele, are both teachers and coaches.  Together they have two children, Kaylee and Landon, who also attend UVC.  Sports are a big part of Mr. Bain's hobbies.  He has coached track and field for nine years, earning "BVAL Coach of the Year" honors in 2012 while leading his team to seven consecutive league titles.  He also is an experienced basketball coach and volleyball enthusiast.  The Bain family calls Redeemers Fellowship their church home.

Pre-Calc (grades 9-12): Kim Clary

 

Kim Clary has been with UVC since the fall of 2015.  After serving 4 years in the United States Air Force, she earned her B.S. in Geophysics from Northern Arizona University.  She worked as a geophysicist in the petroleum industry in Texas for several years, during which time she was blessed with a wonderful husband and two amazing sons.  With the family desiring a change of scenery, she retrained as a mathematics teacher, and the family moved to Roseburg, Oregon, in 1992.  She taught mathematics at Roseburg High School for 16 years, during which time she was awarded a GTE GIFT fellowship grant and had articles published in state and national mathematics publications.  After her “retirement” from public school teaching, she spent several years creating and presenting math professional development to teachers around the state with the Oregon Council of Teachers of Mathematics.  After a short stint in the 9-to-5 world at Umpqua Bank, she landed at UVC and is currently teaching Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Precalculus. She enjoys reading, hiking, camping, and the occasional thunking of an upright bass at bluegrass jams.

 

Spanish (grades 1-12): Mandy Carr

Mandy Carr has served at UVC in various capacities since 2008. She taught high school English and Drama in 2008/2009, Spanish in 2012/2013 and again for part of the year during 2013/2014, and English & Spanish in 2014/2015. Currently Mandy will be teaching first through eighth grade Spanish, Spanish 1, Spanish 2, Spanish 3, and Drama. She has also served as a substitute teacher at both the elementary and high school. Mandy graduated from Southern Oregon University in 2006 with a BA in Communications and a minor in Spanish. She studied Spanish in Seville, Spain with the Semester in Spain program. Mandy has previously worked as a bookkeeper, in retail, and customer service. Her passions, other than Jesus, are her two young children, traveling, reading, and theater arts. She attends Pine Grove Community Church.
 

Science (grades 7-12): Marie Smith

Marie Smith has taught in Christian schools for the last thirty years. For ten of those years she taught all subjects in a one-room high school, from which all three of her sons graduated. This year she begins her third year at UVC, having moved to Oregon upon her husband’s retirement in 2013. She graduated from Humboldt State University with a degree in Wildlife Biology and a post graduate degree in Range Management, and a CA teaching credential.  She was working as a field biologist for the US Forest Service when Jesus changed her career path. Christian education is her passion. Her sons attended a Christian school from kindergarten through twelfth grade and two are now engineers and one is a zoologist.  Besides Christian education Mrs. Smith enjoys raising poultry, gardening, canning, needlework, Scottish history, her basset hounds, and her granddaughter. The Smiths attend North Umpqua Bible Fellowship.
 

Athletic Director: Joe Gather

Joe Gather served in the Marine Corps for 20 years with an honorable discharge in the year of 2000. During these years he played softball and enjoyed the mentoring and coaching aspect of his job in the Marine Corps. Upon moving to Roseburg, Oregon after Retirement, he worked at the Roseburg High School in the maintenance and grounds. Though this was hard after being in charge of many young men in the Corps, God used this work to soften his heart. Many of the teachers loved his hard working ethics and he was loved by many on staff. After two years he moved on to work for the USPS and it was during this time that he met Dave York in 2008 and began assisting the UVC boys’ baseball team. Joe has coached UVC’s boys’ basketball and high school football in Okinawa, Japan. After 10 years of working at the Post Office he was medically retired. This gave opportunity for God to use him where needed. He was allowed to use his gifts and love for sports; love to coach and help young men as he did in the Corps. He accepted the Lord in the year of 1979 and married Sheri Gather in 1981. They have two married children and four grandchildren. They are actively involved in Covenant Life Fellowship Church in Roseburg, Oregon.
 

Assistant to the Athletic Director: Vickie Dishman

  

Vickie Dishman joined the UVC family in 2016.  She and her husband moved here from Brookings, Oregon.  She works part-time as an assistant to the Athletic Director, and occasionally helps out in the office as a backup for Mrs. Zink. Vickie and her husband are graduates of the American Association of Christian Counselors program.  Vickie and her husband’s family are scattered across the west coast with the exception of a daughter in Utah. They enjoy Christian contemporary music such as Chris Tomlin and Casting Crowns.  Vickie plays the piano and sometimes accompanies the elementary choir.  She and her husband love to hike in God’s creation, especially if there’s a waterfall nearby.  She also enjoys reading.  Vickie’s parents are now living with her and her husband.  She and her husband attend Family Church in Green.  

Finance / Business Academy: Diane Mahoney

Diane M. Mahoney is currently the President/CEO of Environné/Consumer Health Research, Inc. a company she has owned since 1995. Environné is known throughout the USA and many countries for being the original and trusted fruit and vegetable wash, on the grocery store shelf. She also is on staff at Umpqua Community College as a Business Advisor through the Small Business Development Center. Diane graduated with degrees from Rowan University/Education, Widener University/Business Administration and San Diego/Hospitality Management. She has taught at the high school and middle school levels for Southern Regional in New Jersey and in the Bandon School District. She will be starting up the Business Academy at UVC.  Stop in her room to hear about the long range plans! Kolby and Myla have been attending UVC since 2009. When not in the office or the classroom, you will find Diane cheering on the sideline for her children’s sports, enjoying the beauty of Southern Oregon on their boat and snow skiing. Their family is proudly dedicated to the Lord and their Christian faith while attending St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.      
 

Bible (grades 7-12), Physical Education, Health,

Weight Training: Glen Dishman

Glen Dishman started at UVC fall of 2016.  He has a B.S. degree from Corban University in Biblical Studies.  Post-graduate studies were at Black Hills State in South Dakota, and Fresno Pacific University.  This is his 36th year in Christian education.  He has also taught P.E., Weight Training, Health, Math, Driver’s Ed, Finance and Family Living.  He has served as an Athletic Director 20+ years, Dean of Students and also served on an ACSI curriculum team.

Coaching history:  Football, Basketball, Track – Coach of the Year five times. 

During his time of coaching Track, he led his team to 16 league championships and five sectional championships in California in eight years.

He has a passion for music ministry and has been on worship teams and choirs with his wife, Vickie.  They are marriage mentors with the American Association of Christian Counselors.  They have four lovely daughters, who are all married, except one.  They have eight grandchildren.

His saying is “born and bred, corn fed, red ‘til dead – GO BIG RED NEBRASKA!”   His passion is teaching the Word of God and seeing students grow in their Christian life. He loves God, family, football, students and snow.  He and his wife attend Family Church in Green.

Worship Arts, Drama, Pre-Algebra, Librarian:

Katy Hogan

Katy Hogan earned her Bachelor of Art’s Degree from Southern Oregon University with a double major in Music Instruction and French Language and Culture. She is currently teaching Worship Arts at the Deer Creek Campus, as well as Elementary Choir/Music at the Roberts Creek campus. This is her first teaching position and she is very blessed to be part of a Christian school where she can freely live out her faith in Jesus, and approach her subjects from a Biblical perspective. Miss Bennett fellowships and serves at Roseburg Christian Fellowship.
 

Leadership: Sarah Beth Armstrong

Sarah Beth Armstrong graduated from Life Pacific College (formally LIFE Bible College) in 1999 with a BA in Bible with an emphasis in teaching, and received certification in Health Education from Concordia University Portland in 2004. She taught for 12 years at Vancouver Christian High School teaching a verity of classes including, but not limited to, Leadership, Health, Drama, and Career Education. Her first year at UVC was the 2015-2016 year teaching Servant Leadership. She loves spending time with her two kids and husband exploring, camping, and going on adventures. Sarah Beth and her family attend New Life Christian Center.
 

Transportation: Tommie White

Tommie was born in Coquille, OR and raised in Bandon. He graduated from Bandon High School in 1993. After graduation, he fell in love with the Roseburg area. He has worked at Umpqua Dairy. He attended C.R. England truck driving school and got his class A CDL in 1999. He also attended a vocational rehab program and received an associate degree. He now owns his own company as a tailor and drives the bus for UVC. Tommie has two grown children. He married his wife, Amy Bagwell, in 2003 and they have two beautiful children. Konnir is in the second grade and Breanne will attend UVC hopefully when she turns five. His hobbies include playing with my children, cooking, and the game of pool. Tommie and his wife enjoy hosting dinner for friends and family and having a short game night afterwards. Tommie’s wife introduced him to Wellspring Bible Fellowship and it continues to be their church home.

 

Facilities: Steve Soper

Steve Soper has been UVC Facilities Manager for the past year. He graduated from Umpqua Community College with an AA degree in Automotive Technology. He retired after 22 years in the Air Force. He went on to retire from the Roseburg Public School District after twelve years as a Site Operator. He and his family are very active in the Bikers For Christ Ministry. The Sopers attend Redeemers Fellowship.
 

Finance Director: Julie Bancroft

Julie has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Oregon and has  more than 15 years experience in finance and bookkeeping.  She and her husband, Terry have three children, two UVC graduates and their youngest is a 6th grader.  Julie is honored to be a part of UVC and has been involved since 2004 as a volunteer in various capacities before joining our staff part-time as the Finance Director in 2013.  Julie enjoys cooking, rafting, reading and camping with her family and loves helping with women’s Bible study at their church:  Wellspring Bible Fellowship.
