Board of Directors

The Umpqua Valley Christian School Board consist of seven members who are selected by the school board and referred to the parents for confirmation. A nominee must be confirmed by 51% of votes cast for each position. Members serve a three year rotating term and following their first three-year term, members may serve a second three-year term if reconfirmed by students’ parents.

UVC is a non-profit corporation. The Board is responsible for ensuring that school decisions align with the mission, vision, and educational philosophy of UVC and they are the keepers of school policy. The only administrative function of the UVC Board is to supervise the Head of School. All monthly school board meetings are open to the school community.

Current Board Members:

Lance Elam - Chairman

Lance Elam is a licensed Professional Engineer and is currently employed by Roseburg Forest Products as the Corporate Energy Manager.  After spending the first fifteen years of his career in various engineering roles in the Pulp & Paper Industry, he came to Roseburg in 2007 to work for Roseburg Forest Products as the Power Plant Superintendent.  Lance graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.  His children have been enrolled in UVC since 2007.  He has coached various sports teams over the years.  He is currently serving as the Board Chairman for the Roseburg Dream Center, a faith based community outreach serving those in need in our community.  He, his wife Patti, and his two children enjoy sports, camping, biking, and hiking.  The Elams attend New Life Christian Center in Roseburg.

Ray Hull

Ray Hull and his wife, Heather, chose UVC for their children 4 years ago.  Their 2 children are in 5th and 8th grade.   He works at Orenco Systems, Inc. as a Web Services Manager.  As a team leader, he has experience in team building, motivating and evaluating staff.  Communication is key and he feels it should be timely, true, and reach all constituents.  He has a strong passion for teaching and has spent the last 13 years in children’s ministry sharing Biblical values so that each student is prepared for the work God has planned for them.  He and his family are members at Family Church in Green.

Susan Julian

Susan Julian has been a speech/language pathologist since 1987. She specializes in Early Intervention. Susan has worked for Douglas ESD for the past eleven years. Susan attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas (GO BEARS!) and received both her BS in Education and M.S. in Speech Pathology and Audiology there. Her daughter Laura has attended UVC since fifth grade, so she and her husband Jeff have been UVC parents for four years. She totally loves supporting UVC sports. Susan enjoys singing, reading, and scrapbooking. Susan and her family love to go RVing on the Oregon coast. Susan also sings on the Worship team and works with Junior and Senior High Girls through a ministry called Proverbs 31 Girls.  She and her family attend Wellspring Bible Fellowship where she is the director of the Wellspring Kids Choir.

Bob Schissler

Bob Schissler and his wife Laurie have a long history with UVC. Each of their five children has attended UVC at some point in their education and Laurie has worked as office manager. Bob is passionate about ministry and Christian education. He is self-employed as an American Family Insurance agent. He feels his business experience as well as ministry experience, including serving as elder, is an asset to the board. He and his family are members of Wellspring Church.


Marlon Sewall

Marlon Sewall and his wife Heather have had their son Koby enrolled in UVC for since 2010. Marlon has been active in assisting with the basketball and track programs at UVC. He is employed as an electrician at Orenco Systems. A strong work ethic, good interpersonal skills, and a non-partial viewpoint are skills Marlon feels are essential for service on the UVC school board. Marlon and his family attend Redeemer’s Fellowship.

Jerry Smart

Jerry has been the Senior Pastor at Foursquare Gospel Center in Winston, Oregon since 2003.   Originally from Texas, he moved to Oregon when he was sixteen years old, graduated from Douglas High School in Winston, then went back to Texas for college.  He has attended South Plains College in Levelland, Texas and Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.  Jerry has served as the President of the Winston/Dillard Ministerial Association, and he has served on the Board of Directors for LifeCare and the Douglas County Evangelical Fellowship in Roseburg. He and his wife, Marla, have three children, two girls and a boy.  Two of them are UVC graduates, one is a sophomore at UVC.  Jerry loves to study history, science, archaeology and religion.  He loves the outdoors and hopes to someday spend more time hiking and camping.
